Sidewalk Chalk Project

Students in e9 at Olathe Northwest High School participated in a fun activity that helped them learn a lot too. Over two days e9 kids sketched and planned out sidewalk chalk drawings while learning about the importance of symbols. Kids were spit up in teams of four and worked together on the project.

During the project I learned a lot about the meaning of symbols. I learned that symbols have been used to represent things in life before written languages. Humans thousands of years ago drew cave paintings thousands of years ago for important purposes. The paintings told them what was their prey or what might be dangerous to them. In modern times, we use symbols to represent a lot of things like people, different corporations, places, and more.

For my team the sketching process went by very smoothly. We got along together really well and we were able to find similarities between us and ways to unite our differences in one symbol that represented us as a whole. We did a good job of deciding what would go on the flag versus what we would keep out. I really liked my team and they brought out the creative side of me and really made me think and I hope I affected them in the same way. After putting out heads together we came up with the idea to personify the e-comm symbol. We figured that since e-comm was the reason for us being at Olathe Northwest it was the best way to unite our ideas and we drew e-comm as a person doing things that me and my group members love doing.

Creating the flag was fairly easy and didn't take much time for my group. Jaydon drew the e-comm logo and the skateboard while everyone else individually drew what the logo was doing. We used the blue colors in the actual e-comm logo and we took advantage of what colors were available after that. We were able to make the trumpet a realistic golden color and we decided the skateboard should be green. My drawing of the basketball was red, purple, and orange and even though it might sound cluttered, I think it made the ball look more interesting than if I had just done orange and black.

I don't think that I would change much about the team aspect for the next team based project. We did a good job of equally producing ideas and I'd like to bring that into the next team effort. We probably could have talked about more details during the planning process. Things like color schemes, size, and where to place things could have come up more while planning. Overall I think the collaboration between my teammates and I, and the overall project was really fun and it be fun to do something like this again.
